Students will learn about memorials and how art can tell a story and function as a memory of a person and/or an event. After studying examples of memorials made in reaction to the Holocaust, each student will create a sculpture as a memorial preserving the memory of their chosen Holocaust victim. They will use the research on their chosen victim as well as additional research on the art of the Holocaust to decorate their sculptures using collage techniques.
Key Visual Art Standards of the Unit
Standard 1.1: Use artistic terms when describing the intent and content of works of art.
Standard 2.4: Design and create an expressive figurative sculpture.
Standard 2.6: Design and create both additive and subtractive sculptures.
Standard 3.1: Examine and describe or report on the role of work of art created to make a social comment or protest social conditions.
Standard 4.1: Define their own points of view and investigate the effects on their interpretation of art from cultures other than their own.
Standard 4.3: Construct an interpretation of a work of art based on the form and content of the work.
